Greening Your RE Business: Showcasing Your Green Designation

Showcasing your new Green designation is no different than showcasing your real estate specialty.

Your local chamber of commerce is the easiest and finest organization to get you started in showcasing your designation. Get involved. Get to know the power networkers, and you will be on your way. You want to target the architects, builders, developers, vendors and designers, along with getting to know the staff at your chamber. Referrals will come your way!

For example, as a member of the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce, I am known as "the first-time home buyer" expert in my community. As I was finishing up my designation coursework, I made sure that the people interested in greening up our city and my contacts at the chamber knew that I was going green. Thanks to planting those seeds, I was selected by the mayor and the president of the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce to help the chamber launch its green initiative for small businesses. This happened very quickly, so you can see how fast you can grow your green garden!

The chamber has also organized a lunch-and-learn called "Greening your Small Business: The Nuts and Bolts of Sustainability." I will be speaking at it. Great exposure and great leverage! I have already leveraged my connections and database, and planted green seeds with my buyers and local real estate associations about going green, along with my speaking/workshops on sustainability in residential real estate. Thanks to my early spring plantings, I will be speaking at an association in Miami.

I have a worksheet for my buyers to encourage them to go with low VOC paints, use sustainable products for flooring and to purchase Energy Star/energy efficient appliances. My business card is green, and I use both sides of it.

The $8,000 tax credit for first-time home buyers is a great tool for the new buyers to go green on a budget! Know about the energy tax credits and energy efficiency mortgages for residential properties.

Are you tweeting and blogging yet? The most effective and affordable marketing today is social networking. My handle on Twitter is www.twitter.com/greenrealtorfla, and I started a social networking site called The Green Real Estate Report. The Planet Green television network has great programs and a website, so use them as a source for ideas!

Speaking of networks, green networking groups like the USGBC are in every city. This is one of the most informative organizations that I know of. Green Drinks is another fun group. Seek out green groups and events in your area that fit your personality and your goals. Or start your own!
